"On the fence? Choose the Nook!!" 2010-03-17
By Big Reader (LA)
Ok, let me start by saying that I've had the Nook for about a week now, and I absolutely LOVE it!! I brought it to work the first day I got it and showed everyone, and they all wanted to go out and get one (actullay 1 of them did). Right out of the box I was able to start navigating the menus with ease.

The e-ink technology is really cool. It resembles a real book page. The brighter the light, the better it looks, so outdoor reading is possible compared to a backlit screen that fades when you go outside.

After reading many of the other reviews on here, you almost get the feeling that the Nook has many issues or problems. I can tell you that none of those "issues" have occured on my Nook. Now I can tell you this, when I tried to dwnld my first book, it was having some issues. It couldn't connect to the store, so after contacting customer service, the problem was quickly recognized and solved. The problem was user error. When I registered my Nook, I typed my credit card # in wrong, and that's what caused the problem. So make sure you enter your info in correctly to help avoid that error. :)

I was on the fence for a while about which e-reader to choose. So I went to a B&N and played with a Nook. I was sold immediatly! Part of the reason was beacuse there happened to be a customer standing right next to me that had the Kindle 2 in his hand. I got to play with both and compare them at the same time. The Kindle 2 was very nice, but just felt a little cheaper, not as solid-feeling like the Nook. Plus the keyboard on the kindle leaves little room for you to hold it. The Nook just felt so much better in my hand. The screen navigating was much more simple too in comparison to the Kindle. The customer that had the Kindle was in the store to look at the Nook! He wasn't completely satisfied with the Kindle, so he was comparing them too!

I can literally go on for days, but I do need to get back to work. Get the Nook, you won't be sorry!

"Fantastic e-reader. Just love it." 2010-03-17
By birdonamission (Maryland)
Battery life -- since the v1.2 software upgrade, it has been phenomenal. Recommend leaving Airplane mode on except when you actually need connectivity (to purchase books, mainly). You can always turn Airplane mode off overnight while charging so you can have your Daily updated by morning.

Replaceable battery -- does the Kindle let you do that? That's what I thought.

Touchscreen -- love it. Breaks the monotony of monotone. But that's not why I love is so well. I enjoy the swiping feature to turn pages. Very cool, but also functional. Arrows work, but swiping takes it to another usability level. I also like the navigation process in the touchscreen. Works well for me for getting around. No, it's not like a mouse, but this is a ereader, not a laptop. The virtual keyboard works fine for me, but I can see issues if you have double-wide fingers (smile), but just use your fingertips and you're fine.

Lending -- don't think I'll use that too much because I don't have lots of friends or family with nooks to be able to this with, but it's there and it's darn cool to have this as an OPTION.

Borrowing ebooks from public libraries -- what's not to like about that??? You get to read current titles for FREE. My library has a note that Amazon does not allow ebooks from the library to be read on Kindles...I'd be ticked about that if I owned a Kindle.

Looks -- I'm a function over form guy most of the time, but sorry, the nook is MUCH better looking than a Kindle. The form factor is just less cluttered and it feels solid and comfortably weighted. There's a certain amount of trade-offs between real or virtual keyboards, but I much rather have the touchscreen than a Big Momma chicklet keyboard taking up all that real estate.

More open ebook format options -- less DRM hassles. Period.

Expandable memory with microSD cards -- nice option. (Although room for 1,500 books in on-board memory is mind-boggling as it is.)

So... I think the nook that's all of one Christmas season old and the Kindle that's matured in the market for several years already now are both amazing products. But, no one can tell me the nook is not AS good as a Kindle or even better with some of its features. In fact, I believe many of the issues people ran into with their nooks are not unlike issues that Kindle owners run into, especially when Kindle was only 3 months old way back when (like the nook). And to be frank, many of the complaints that came forth prior to v1.2 and even now are because people REFUSE to read the manual or go to the help web sites or message boards that explain many of the fixes or get-arounds or instructions for the people who are allergic to reading those aforementioned manuals.

"Product is useless/Customer Service at the store is priceless" 2010-03-08
By C. Quintero Salazar (Venezuela)
I bought a Nook during one of my visits to Tampa, more specifically at the Wiregrass Shops. I must admit that I was tremendously excited when I got the device, because of the reviews and also the SD card capability.

My joy was short lived. During the 2 weeks that I owned the product I was never able once to open none of my sideloaded pdf's that I have amassed over the years (over 30GB - I am a voracious reader). A long string of calls to Customer Service and the shop itself ensued, after which I decided to take the trip again (I live outside of the USA) to return the device directly to the store.

Much to my surprise, they were extremely receptive at the store and also very apologetic for the device's inability to function properly outside the States and also the lack of functionality and propietary issues. I was refunded for all the items (Nook, cover case and screen protector) in no time at all.

So, in summary, the Nook gets a ZERO star in my review for paying more attention to the esthetics rather than the functionality of the reader, but B&N gets a FIVE star rating for their approachability and for their great costumer service!

"Get a kindle 1 or nook . Anything but a kindle 2." 2010-03-08
By Jiahui Shi (Upstate, New York)
As of the first draft of this review i have owned a nook for almost 2 weeks.

Initial observations.

1. Frustration-full packaging. it literally came with a 7 step instruction sheet on how to open your stand to get to your nook.

2. 1.0.0 starting firmware. OTA it downloaded 1.2.0

3. Even with 1.2.0 rooted or other wise, its slower than a kindle 1,2,dx in starting up time. page turn time is about the same if not faster.

4. rooting is easy.(cough cough nookdevs.com cough cough) getting pandora to work is hard.

5. there are some e-books that cost more than 9.99 (blame harper collins those rich SOB). around the same price as kindle books and they are open source epub unlike propritory kindle format(epub works on sony readers too)

6. texts in pdfs scale REAALLY nicely. pictures are another story. NOT all pdfs work properly.

7. B&N members get ZERO discounts on anything nook related(but its a gr8 excuse to cancel the member ship and get a refund even though you used it consistently for the past month :)

8. Battery life really does suck. thats what spare batteries are for. with airplane mode(all wifi/ ATT turned off) i can get a good week of reading before recharging.

9. E-INK + Sunlight = best reading expierence EVER.. E-INK + CFL's = mehhh(aka i paid how much for this)

As i mentioned in the title. get either a nook or a kindle 1. (or a DX if u need an excuse not to buy an Itampon)

refer to this guys review of the kindle 2 vs kindle 1.

[...]

to my best knowledge. the DX hasnt been stripped down(yet?)

i'll add more(including a video review, after midterm week is over

"HORRIBLE! I Should've bought a Kindle!" 2010-03-07
By Doubleagent Seven (Manhattan Beach, CA)
I did my research and felt like the Nook would be a good choice for an e-reader. This thing is horrible!! Kept telling me I was connected- but then kept saying the network could not connect! Downloading is a joke! Does not download, even trying to download from Barnes & Noble's site is a task. Instructions that come with this is laughable- just tells you a basic jist but does not address any problems.

I have just spent over an hour and a half trying to download purchases and it's still not transferring! This is so very frustrating. What a piece of junk. I will be going back to B&N first thing tomorrow to get a refund. Customer service is a joke, not open late enough. Do your research, and look for other complaints about this one- chances are, the negative things people say about the Nook are correct.

"Great Product" 2010-03-20
By M. K. Dovers
I've had it a whole month and can't find anything bad about it. It was my birthday present to myself. The screen is very clear and easy to see. I have the Kindle app on my iPod but this is so much nicer to read books on. I really really love it.

"I can't be without my Kindle!!!!" 2010-03-20
By I. Katsamanis (New York, NY)
I have to say... Kindle has to be my favorite gadget. My fiancee gave it to me for x-mas, and I haven't been able to put it down. Easy to read, easy to save, easy to download, good priced books. I can't say enough about how much I love my Kindle. The only time I don't have it in my purse is when my fiancee sneaks it out to read some of the books I've downloaded. now he's hooked on it himself and downloads books as well. I think eventually he will need his own. :)

If you've been undecided on what to get, I will tell you my honey does a ton of research and comparisons. He told me after he gave me the Kindle that he was undecided between the Nook and the Kindle. The deciding factor was based on ease of use, clarity of screen, flexibilty of downloads, price of books, and compatibility.

Don't take my word for it though.... read all 13K+++ reviews about the Kindle. I'm sure most will be very positive!!!!!! :)

I.K.

"WOW!" 2010-03-20
By J. Martin (traveling the world)
I am a skeptic. I have been eying the Kindles now for a year, and finally purchased one. It is way better than I expected. We travel a lot internationally. Downloading to the computer via USB was easy. Transferring books between my Kindle pc was a snap. I love the screen! And I love the size. It is easy to hold over long periods of time especially with it in a soft case. Even my husband is rethinking and wants one now. He rarely uses e-gadgets! We tried a magazine, and love not having to thumb through all the ads! Amazon got it right with this way cool device. By the way, the text to speech is awesome! The only thing I would like to see is a little digital time display so I don't too "lost in the book" and forget the time! The screen protectors and skins are a great idea to protect it, and they were easy to apply. It is amazing how many classics are available at no charge if you need to budget the ole' reading appetite!

"Lovin' My Kindle" 2010-03-20
By Marria Hall
My husband gave me my Kindle for Christmas. I finally had found a piece of Electronics that I got excited about. I am a reader & my closets are full. It is nice to have my favorite books at my disposal without carrying books around. It is like having a best friend with you all the time, and they do not talk back to you.Smile!! I have not had ANY problems with my kindle & I use it all the time. I have the Kindle 2, the updated version. The electronic books are cheaper, I do not have to go to the store, and it only takes a minute to receive them. I would recommend the kindle experience to anyone, especially people who have a passion for reading.

"Kindle and Amazon - A great product and great service" 2010-03-20
By AliciaAnn11
I love my kindle. My husband purchased the Kindle DX for me for our anniversary. It was the best thing he's ever bought for me. I've taken it just about everywhere with me. I read when I'm working out, it reads to me when I drive. LOVE IT. However, I had a problem with the Kindle DX and I contacted Amazon.com. The service was outstanding and they helped me resolve my problems. Between the Kindle and Amazon's service, there couldn't be a better combination.

"Love it!!!" 2010-03-19
By R. Trujillo (Nevada)
My husband purchased the Kindle DX Wireless Reading Device for my birthday this year. I turned 56 and my eyesight is not what it used to be so I was not enjoying reading books as I've always done in the past. Since receiving my Kindle, I'm back to reading every chance I get. I love the convenience of downloading a book in less than 30 seconds and being able to hold the Kindle with one hand comfortably and also the setting of the bigger font. It has been the best present I've ever received. I love it and cannot say enough good things about it.

"books cost too much, great tool" 2010-03-19
By Christopher M. Schmid (Florida, USA)
i would love to use this book for school but the price of USED text books cost less than the Kindle discount price. what is worse is that i can sell the used text book when i am done reading it which makes the cost difference even greater.

"I don't go anywhere without it" 2010-03-19
By Paulo Bandeira
Exactly what I was looking for. After researching several products I opted for Kindle and I'm sure I made the right choice. Now I can take all my books with me everywhere I go.

"Hardware good downloads not" 2010-03-19
By David Lloyd (Halifax, West Yorlshire)
Firstly the good bit - The kindle is very good although you'll need a US main adaptor to charge it from the mains (I thought it was a legal requirement for electrical items to be fitted with a UK 3 pin plug here - But I guess Amazon get round this by directing you to the US site to buy it - Sneeky!)

Now the bad bits - I was on holiday in Egypt recently so decided to download a UK newspaper. What a load of rubbish! One picture on page one and thats your lot! The rest is one huge wad of text bearing no resemblance to the actual newspaper and this was the case for all the UK papers. I also wanted to download probably one of the most popular series of books for sale at the moment - One of the Harry Potter books but amazingly they're not available! The kindle is also supposed to let you browse certain sites (well they'relisted on the menu) These include Amazon, CNN and the BBC but I've had no success as yet.

So all in all a good product mared by lousy support - My opinion - Buy an Ipad when it's released - wish I'd waited!
